The journey of Singapore's sustainable water management does not end
with the establishment of the Four National Taps. Although the infrastructure,
technologies and programmes are already in place to ensure we have an
adequate supply of high quality water, corporate and individual consumers
play a vital part in Singapore's water management for the sustainability of
this precious resource.
After decades of protecting the raw water sources, PUB opened up various
reservoirs for recreational water activities to get people closer to water so that
they can better appreciate its preciousness and endearing qualities.
The aim is to
inculcate a sense of ownership of this shared resource so that everyone feels the
importance of conserving it by using it wisely and wants to be a guardian of water
by ensuring the raw water sources are kept clean and unpolluted.
The reward that awaits us is not just a sustainable supply of water. We will also
get to enjoy a myriad of recreational activities such as paddling on a kayak or a
dragonboat, wakeboarding, rowing, sailing, rappelling across a reservoir and more.
By keeping our rivers and reservoirs clean, we will not only contain the costs
of water treatment but also enhance the aesthetics of our living environment.
Since
2006, PUB has made a further leap with the launch of the Active, Beautiful, Clean
Waters (ABC Waters) programme. This long-term initiative aims to transform our
functional water collection network of drains, canals and reservoirs into picturesque
streams, rivers and lakes. More community and recreational activities will become
possible and this initiative will bring waterfront living to the heartlanders, enhancing
the quality of life in Singapore.
By having various activities at the reservoirs and
selected rivers, PUB hopes to bring people closer
to water. For those not into water activities, PUB
brings the water to them through the ABC Waters
programme. The aim is to enhance the bond between
the population and our precious water resources.
PUB's long-term goal is to build a community of
water-loving individuals and organisations who
are passionate about our water bodies and strive
to protect them.
The Friends of Water programme is aimed at enlarging
PUB's circle of friends who regularly report leaks,
volunteer their time to help raise our national water
consciousness and organise various activities for the
water cause.
The Our Waters programme is targeted mainly at
corporations, schools and organisations where they
adopt a reservoir, reservoir park or waterway and be
its guardian for two years.
To encourage outstanding partners, the prestigious
Watermark Award is presented each year to deserving
schools, organisations, corporations and individuals
who have gone the extra mile for the water cause.

WATER,
A PRIZED ASSET
While there is enough water for you and me, what
happens if our generation squanders away current
sources of water through careless usage?
The next
source of water could cost much more than current
sources. That's why the price of water in Singapore
must reflect the preciousness of this resource to
ensure that it is sustainable for future generations.
There are two components in the pricing. The water
tariff is aimed at covering the full cost of production and
supply of water. However, pricing at just cost recovery
may result in many of us over-using this precious
resource.
Therefore, a water conservation tax is applied
to the water tariff to reflect the real cost of water, that is
the higher cost of additional sources of water. As every
drop of water is precious, the water conservation tax is
applied from the first drop of water used. This encourages
all of us to be prudent in the way we use water. |
