Background
PUB has pioneered a new water treatment
technology by integrating desalination
and NEWater treatment processes to
treat water of varying salinity into potable
water. This Variable Salinity Plant (VSP)
technology has potential to increase the
water catchment area in Singapore from
67% to 90% by tapping the small rivers and streams as sources of water as it is not
cost efficient to build conventional systems
for such small catchments.
Following its success of a pilot study,
PUB embarked on a medium scale
demonstration VSP of 1 mgd (4,550 m3/day)
capacity at Sungei Tampines in 2007.
Plan
With this new technology, PUB aims to
increase the overall catchment area in
Singapore to about 90% in the long term.
Benefits
We will be able to harness more rain water
from the remaining marginal catchments in
Singapore to augment water supply at
a lower cost. |
