On World Water Day on 22 March 2006, PUB
launched the 10-Litre Challenge.
To support the 10-Litre Challenge, PUB and the
Singapore Environment Council also jointly introduced
the Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme in October 2006
to encourage manufacturers and importers to come
up with more innovative water-effcient products.
Under the scheme, products that are efficient
in its use of water will be graded, with three ticks
representing a product that uses the least water.
There are currently 39 brands on the scheme, offering
337 models of water fittings.
With these water conservation initiatives,
households not only save on their water
bills but also contribute towards a more
sustainable water supply for the nation.
These are aimed at reducing
the per capita water consumption in
Singapore, to meet the new national
target of 155 litres per person per
day by 2012, down from the current
158 litres a day.
"Although the Four National Taps
are now firmly in place, we should still
strive to use water wisely. Singaporeans
can play their part in conserving water by
using water-efficient products. The water-efficient labels on the various products will
allow consumers to make an informed choice when
deciding between similar models," said Mr Chong
Hou Chun, PUB's Director of Water Supply Network.
A new Water Efficiency Fund was also recently
launched by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources to encourage more
organisations, companies and industries to adopt
innovative measures to promote water conservation.
Set up by PUB, the Water Efficiency Fund offers
co-funding to organisations, companies, industries and
community groups which implement efficient methods
of managing their water consumption such
as recycling of potable water, NEWater and
industrial water, the use of alternative
water sources such as seawater and
implementing initiatives to promote
water conservation in the community.
"The Water Efficiency Fund will
help us reach out to those industries
which are big water users because
of the nature of their businesses.
The fund will come in useful as putting in new and innovative water
conservation initiatives may involve
changing the mode of operation or
putting in whole new infrastructure,"
said Mr Chong.
