Be Water-wise: Use Only What You Need
Nearly 50% of the water used at homes goes to showers and kitchen sink washing. PUB rolled out a series of television advertisements and other initiatives from 27 Feb 2011 to encourage people to adopt good habits by taking shorter showers and not to wash dishes under a running tap.
Today, Singapore has built a robust, diversified and sustainable water supply from four different sources known as the Four National Taps. More than 5 million people enjoy clean, safe water at a turn of a tap. However securing an adequate water supply is not enough. It is equally important to manage the water demand.
Over the years, PUB has built up a comprehensive water conservation programme to reach out to the 3P (People, Private and Public) sectors. PUB’s long-term efforts in water conservation have seen Singapore’s per capita domestic water consumption dropped from 165 litres per day in 2003 to the current 153 litres. The target is to lower it to 147 litres by 2020 and 140 litres by 2030.
With its new tagline “Every drop counts, Use only what you need”, PUB is focusing on two of the most water consuming activities at home: shower and washing in kitchen sink.
Generally, showers and washing in the kitchen sink takes up 29% and 22% of an average family’s monthly water consumption respectively. By shortening the duration of water usage, people can save 9 litres (Six 1.5-litre bottles) of water per minute in the shower and 8 litres (Five 1.5-litre bottles) of water per minute in the kitchen sink.
