Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme

Alternate Source of Water

Alternate Source of Water

Manufacturing industry and commercial buildings are encouraged to use NEWater as a substitute for potable water for non-potable use, thus reducing demand for potable water.  Alternative sources of water such as NEWater, seawater and rainwater can be used for processes, in cooling towers and general washing.

NEWater

NEWater is treated used water that has undergone stringent purification and treatment process using advanced dual-membrane (microfiltration and reverse osmosis) and ultraviolet technologies. It is of a quality that exceeds drinking water standards stipulated by WHO and USEPA.

NEWater is mainly supplied for non-potable uses such as for process water use in industrial premises, air conditioning cooling towers in commercial buildings, irrigation/landscaping as well as general washing.

Seawater

Industries located on offshore islands or near the sea are encouraged to use seawater for cooling and process use.

Rainwater Harvesting

Developers who would like to build rainwater collection systems and underground tanks to collect rainwater in their premises for their own non-potable uses, such as washing and toilet flushing, can do so. This applies to premises located within water catchments as well as those outside water catchments.

Used rainwater that is discharged into sewers will be subject to waterborne fees (WBF) as the used water, like all other used water generated from domestic and commercial/industrial sources, requires proper treatment and disposal. A simplified way of collecting WBF based on tank size and expected usage would be used in this instance.

Qualified Persons / Professional Engineers are to consult PUB (Catchment and Waterways Department) for any rainwater collection system that may be proposed under the development and to comply with NEA's guidelines on mosquito prevention in rainwater collection systems.
