World Water Monitoring Day

The World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is an annual international outreach programme initiated by America’s Clean Water Foundation in 2003 to raise public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world. WWMD is held on 18 October yearly. More than 65 countries participated in 2006’s WWMD.

As part of WWMD, PUB worked with the Environment Engineering Society of Singapore to engage five schools under the Our Waters Programme.

Students from the Dunman High School, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, St Andrew’s Secondary School and Temasek Polytechnic worked alongside volunteers from the Waterways Watch Society and PUB staff in this water monitoring exercise. The students monitored the water at nine sites around Singapore. The sites included Bedok Reservoir, Geylang River, Kallang Basin, Kallang River, MacRitchie, Pandan Reservoir, Singapore River, Sungei Api Api and Sungei Pandan.

Water samples were collected from various locations at each site for analyses. Data recorded in the field data sheets were uploaded onto the international WWMD website as part of Singapore’s participation and contribution in this exercise. Through such collaborations involving PUB, non-government organizations and academic institutions, we hope to nurture a stronger sense of ownership among Singapore’s young, so that they too will be guardians of our water.
