Public Sewers Rehabilitation Programme

PUB has an ongoing comprehensive programme to check and rehabilitate all public sewers. Over the last 14 years, PUB has rehabilitated about 1,000 km of public sewers.

PUB’s predictive / preventive approach aims to:

  • Restore structural integrity the of sewerage system
    - This prevents defects that could lead to chokes, leaks and structural failure of the pipes.
  • Prevent pollution to waterways
    - Leaky sewers would cause pollution to waterways and reservoirs.
  • Prevent overloading of the sewerage network
    - By reducing the amount of groundwater and seawater that infiltrate into sewers, we prevent overloading of pipes and WRPs that could affect NEWater production.
  • Restore flow efficiency
    - This is done by enhancing conveyance capacity and reducing chokes and blockage.

Phase 1 (1996): 450 km of public sewers were rehabilitated. These were located mainly in older parts of Singapore like Chinatown, Alexandra and Jurong Industrial Estate. (Completed)

Phase 2 (2001): 350 km of public sewers were rehabilitated, mainly within water catchments and the southern coastal areas.(Completed)

Phase 3 (2006): 300 km of public sewers are being rehabilitated, mainly in the Marina Catchment.

Phase 4 (2009): 1,130 km of public sewers are being rehabilitated. Most of these are located in new reservoir catchments such as the Punggol-Serangoon Reservoir catchment and coastal areas like Pasir Ris, Changi, East Coast and West Coast.
