Construction Sites

Construction sites can be made water efficient by implementing a few simple measures.

1. Appoint a Water Controller

A water controller should manage water conservation at the worksite by adopting the following practices:

  • To sign up for Water Efficiency Manager Course to equip with skills and knowledge on water management.
  • To carry out water audits and monitor the water consumption in various areas of water usage within the premises.
  • To install private water meters for different areas of water usage and take meter readings regularly, i.e. daily or weekly.
  • To inspect the water reticulation system for leaks and to promptly repair any leaks found. Fortnightly checks are recommended.
  • To co-ordinate and oversee water conservation initiatives, educate workers/employees on the need to conserve water through pre-work briefings, talks, discussions, publicity materials, etc.
  • To liaise with PUB officers on matters pertaining to water conservation.

Toilets/Washrooms

Mandatory Measures

  • All water fittings such as taps, flushing cisterns, urinals and urinal flush valves installed must be labelled with at least one or more ticks under MWELS.
  • Install self-closing delayed action taps at all wash basins and shower points.
  • Install constant flow regulators at all wash basin mixers, shower mixers and bib taps

Water Efficient Measures

  • Adopt water efficient flow rates.
  • Install water efficient labelled fittings with ‘excellent’ ratings.
  • Install water efficient labelled dual flush low capacity flushing cistern which uses only 4.5 litres or less for full flush and 3 litres or less for low flush.
  • Use low flush for flushing of liquid waste.
  • Install waterless urinals.
  • Reduce flush volume of urinals to 0.5 litres per flush.
  • Do not allow toilet cisterns to overflow.
  • Do not use the toilet’s water closet suite as a trash basket.

Kitchens/ Cooking area

Mandatory Measures

  • Install constant flow regulators at all sink taps, mixers and bib taps.

Water Efficient Measures

  • Adopt water efficient flow rates.
  • Install water efficient labelled fittings with ‘excellent’ ratings.
  • Wash vegetables and dishes in a filled sink instead of running taps.
  • Do not thaw frozen food or melt ice under running water.
  • Use a low flow rinser for washing of dishes.

Canteens

Mandatory Measures

  • Install self-closing delayed action taps at all wash basins and wash troughs.

Water Efficient Measures

  • Adopt water efficient flow rates.
  • Install water efficient labelled fittings with ‘excellent’ ratings.

Other Areas

  • Wash your floors using a mop and bucket instead of hose.
  • If a hose is used, fix a spring loaded nozzle to the hose.
  • Advise the cleaners/workers to conserve water at all times during cleaning activities.
  • Use non-potable water for washing of vehicles at the vehicle washing area wherever possible and recycle the used water.
  • An earth removal facility for the vehicles should be installed to remove the earth from the tyres before washing commences.

Note: Constant flow regulators are not required where water pressure at the fitting is less than 1 bar. As a guide, these regulators need to be installed only where the static water pressure at the fitting exceeds 1.5 bar.
