Water Saving Tips

Singaporeans use most water when they shower. Showers account for about 29 percent of total household consumption. The amount of water used in the kitchen sink is the next highest, at 22 percent. Laundry comes in a close third, with 19 percent.

Here’s how you can do your part in conserving water:

Brushing Teeth

Use a mug or tumbler when brushing your teeth

Shower

Keep showers to under 5 minutes and turn off the tap while soaping

Flushing the toilet

Use a short flush for liquid wastes and a long flush only for solid wastes.

Washing Clothes

  • Never wash clothes under a running tap. Use a wash tub to wash them by hand. When using a washing machine, wash with a full load instead of a half load.
  • A front-loading washing machine is more water-efficient than a top-loading machine.
  • Collect used water from the washing machine for flushing the toilet or mopping the floor.

In the Kitchen

  • Instead of a running tap, fill your kitchen sink with water when washing dishes or raw food.
  • When washing the kitchen floor, use a mop and bucket instead of a hose.

Watering the plants

For watering your plants, you can collect rain water or water from rinsing vegetables.

Washing car

Hosing down the car wastes a lot of water. It is more effective to use a bucket of water and a piece of cloth.

Monitor water bills

Check your water bills to monitor your family’s monthly consumption. If your consumption is more than the average, review your family’s water usage habits.

Repair leaks promptly

Repair leaks and dripping taps immediately to prevent water wastage.
