Singapore, 29 July 2025 - Recovery works along Tanjong Katong Road South are progressing steadily, following the sinkhole incident.

Over the last two days, PUB has been working on stabilising the ground and rendering the road to be safe for use once again. This started with the backfilling of the shaft in the construction site, followed by the draining of water from the sinkhole, removal of the car from the sinkhole, backfilling of the sinkhole with liquefied stabilised soil (LSS) and tests and scans of the surrounding areas.

PUB is conducting rigorous tests and scans to detect underground cavities and verify ground stability. The tests are:

     1. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) scan, which uses radio waves to assess the subsurface layers;
     2. Probing, which involves drilling into the ground to detect the ground condition and presence of any voids; and
     3. Seismic scanning to record sound waves underground, to identify anomalies that might indicate voids.

The recovery process with accompanying photos is enclosed in the Annex.

PUB has used LSS to backfill the sinkhole. LSS is a mixture of soil, water and cement which is commonly used to fill up voids underground. This material is flowable and will harden over time. This method does not require any mechanical compaction, thus reducing time required for the works.

Even as PUB works towards completing the repairs as quickly as possible, we are conducting thorough safety assessments in consultation with Building Construction Authority and Land Transport Authority, before reopening the affected road to the public.

We seek the public's continued understanding and patience during this period. We are working round-the-clock to expedite the recovery of the road. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to residents and motorists.
