Overview

Kallang River at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park project is a joint collaboration between PUB and NParks to turn a concrete canal into a picturesque river teeming with life. Under the ABC Waters Programme, a combination of plants, natural materials such as rocks, and civil engineering techniques were introduced to soften the edges of the waterway, give it a natural appearance and prevent soil erosion. Known as soil bio-engineering, this is the first time that such techniques have been explored in Singapore. Approximately 10 different types of bio-engineering techniques were tested for 11 months before installation. With the river naturalized, wildlife has been attracted to the area. Creatures such as the Common Bluetail damselfly and Common Scarlet dragonfly now frequent the riverbank, adding to the biodiversity of the park. The river channel itself was designed based on a flood plain concept and is linked to a network of drains in the city. During dry weather, the flow of water is confined to a narrow stream in the middle of the river. In the event of a storm, the adjacent park area doubles up as a conveyance channel, carrying the rainwater downstream gradually

Community Outreach

Various partners from the People, Public, Private (3P) sectors come together to initiate water-centric outreach programmes at Kallang River @ Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in support of the water cause.

Students and teachers from Raffles Institution created an interactive learning trail highlighting the features and rich biodiversity at this site. Student leaders facilitate the learning trail for their peers and the community. On this experiential learning trail, participants learn about Singapore's water management, as well as the transformation of the 2.7km canal into a meandering river, another ABC Waters project. Their efforts inspired other school partners such as Chongzheng Primary School and Anderson Junior College to develop similar learning trails.

ITE College Central and Raffles Institution collaborated to develop a preschool learning trail at Kallang River @ Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. The printing of the learning trail resource books is sponsored by Ricoh Singapore Private Limited. Through fun-filled activities and songs, children learn to appreciate our water sources.
