Impact of haze on water supply
The current haze over Singapore has no impact on the water supplied to homes. Particulate matter in the air that is washed down by rain is diluted by the huge volume of water in the reservoir to a level where their presence is insignificant. Furthermore, the water treatment process at the waterworks involve multi-barrier processes that ensure that the water meets World Health Organisation (WHO) standards before it is supplied to customers.
During the water treatment process, particulate matter is removed during the coagulation and flocculation processes. During coagulation and flocculation, coagulants are added to the raw water to aggregate the particles. This allows the suspended matter to settle more readily and then be removed in the sedimentation tank. Rapid gravity sand filters or membranes then filter out the remaining particles of suspended matter.

In addition, PUB has in place a comprehensive “source-to-tap” monitoring programme for water quality to ensure that the water we supply to our customers is clean and absolutely safe for drinking. Tap water in Singapore is safe for consumption without any further treatment (eg, boiling or filtering) by the end-consumer.
