PUB shut down a water pipeline for repair work

PUB, the national water agency, has shut down a water pipeline along Seletar Expressway (SLE) to repair a leak. The work is expected to be completed by end Dec 2015.

This pipeline supplies water to customers in the Punggol, Tampines, Pasir Ris, Loyang/Changi, Simei and Bedok areas. There should be no disruption in water supply as water will be supplied through alternate pipelines. Some customers may experience lower water pressure during peak hours.

Members of the public can call the PUB 24-hour call centre at 1800-CALL-PUB (1800-2255 782) for any assistance.

Impact of haze on water supply

The current haze over Singapore has no impact on the water supplied to homes. Particulate matter in the air that is washed down by rain is diluted by the huge volume of water in the reservoir to a level where their presence is insignificant. Furthermore, the water treatment process at the waterworks involve multi-barrier processes that ensure that the water meets World Health Organisation (WHO) standards before it is supplied to customers.

During the water treatment process, particulate matter is removed during the coagulation and flocculation processes. During coagulation and flocculation, coagulants are added to the raw water to aggregate the particles. This allows the suspended matter to settle more readily and then be removed in the sedimentation tank. Rapid gravity sand filters or membranes then filter out the remaining particles of suspended matter.

For more information on Singapore’s water treatment process, please watch this video or refer to the attached pdf.

In addition, PUB has in place a comprehensive “source-to-tap” monitoring programme for water quality to ensure that the water we supply to our customers is clean and absolutely safe for drinking. Tap water in Singapore is safe for consumption without any further treatment (eg, boiling or filtering) by the end-consumer.

Pipeline Operations at Lentor Estate and Ang Mo Kio Ave 4

PUB will be carrying out pipeline operations in the Lentor Estate and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 areas as part of its efforts to enhance the water supply network . The works will be carried out from 2 to 4 March 2015.

During the course of the works, PUB will take necessary precautionary measures to ensure water supply to customers will not be affected. Notwithstanding, should customers experience any issue with their water supply, such as temporary discolouration of their tap water which could be due to re-suspension of mineral sediments in the water pipeline or air entrapment during the valve operations, they can let the tap run for a few minutes to clear the water or call PUB's 24-hour Call Centre at 1800-284-6600 for help and assistance.
