Minister for Social and Family Development and Adviser for Marine Parade GRC, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin was the Guest-of-Honour at the official opening of the project this afternoon.

Siglap Canal is 3.2km long. It runs between Bedok Reservoir Road and the sea, and passes through estates like Kembangan, Telok Kurau and Marine Parade. At the Community Club, the deck-over of the canal has added community spaces where residents can gather and catch up with one other. The planter boxes on the deck are also integrated with seats for residents to rest their feet as they interact and bond with one another and enjoy the breeze by the waterway. This deck-over of the canal is also designed to be integrated seamlessly with the future linear park along the park connector. A rain garden planted with trees and shrubs such as the sea hibiscus and simpoh ayer treat rainwater runoff from the Community Club. Besides improving the water quality discharged into Siglap Canal, the rain garden also beautifies the surrounding landscape and enhances biodiversity.

The revamped Siglap Canal has already received attention from five adopters who are eager to play their part for the spruced-up waterway. Kampong Kembangan Community Club Management Committee (KKCCMC) is one such example. “We are excited to adopt Siglap Canal and do our part for water. At KKCCMC, we have a brisk walking group of over 200 members. When our brisk-walkers gather on the deck for their monthly exercise, they will help to be PUB’s “eyes and ears” on the ground by keeping a lookout onsite and reporting any irregularities to PUB.”, Loo Siok Chen, 37 years old, member of KKCCMC.

Mdm Noeline Gomes, who has been living in the area for 48 years said “My neighbours and I have been looking forward to the makeover of Siglap Canal. With the new community deck, we can now get across the canal to the Community Club quickly and conveniently. We also have plans to make use of this plaza to organise activities in the future. Today’s event is an example of how the new space has brought residents closer together to mingle and have fun.”

Mr Tan Nguan Sen, PUB’s Chief Sustainability Officer, said, “ABC Waters @ Siglap Canal demonstrates the innovative use of space at our waterways. By decking over the canal, we have created additional communal space with pockets of greenery for the community to bond by the waterway, which was previously lacking in this area. We welcome more partners to join us in taking ownership of our waters and play an active role in keeping them clean and free of litter.”

Activity Plaza created after the deckover, with an upgraded covered linkway in the background

New Activity Plaza created in front of the CC after Siglap Canal was decked over

Planter box with seats

Rain Garden planted with trees and tall shrubs

PUB is a statutory board under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. It is the water agency that manages Singapore’s water supply, water catchment and used water in an integrated way.

PUB has ensured a diversified and sustainable supply of water for Singapore with the Four National Taps (local catchment water, imported water, NEWater, desalinated water).

To provide water for all, PUB calls on all to play our part to conserve water, keep our water catchments and waterways clean and build a relationship with water so we can enjoy our water resources. If we all play our part, we can have enough water for all our needs – for industry, for living, for life.

The ABC Waters Programme was launched by PUB in 2006 to transform Singapore’s water bodies beyond their utilitarian purpose into beautiful and clean streams, rivers and lakes, creating a vibrant City of Gardens and Water. Over 100 potential locations have been identified for implementation by 2030. To date, 30 ABC Waters projects have been completed.

Like us at
Follow us on and
Subscribe to our channel at
For our latest event photos, visit or
Download our mobile apps: MyWaters for iOS, Android or Windows Phone and
PURE Magazine for iOS, Android, Blackberry or Windows Phone
Visit our website at
5/10/2017 6:33:26 AM
