Scaling NEW heights in the water and environment sector227 NEW heights in the water and environment sector30/7/2018 4:00:00 PMIssue DatePress releaseAbout PUB, Singapore’s National Water AgencyFind out more about usAbout National Environment Agency
Nine candidates received the National Environment and Water (NEW) Scholarship from Singapore’s Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, at the NEW Scholarship Award Ceremony this afternoon.

Selected from a pool of over 600 applicants, a total of nine scholarships were awarded this year – with six scholarships from PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency, and three scholarships awarded from the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Jointly offered by PUB and NEA, the NEW Scholarship selects outstanding young talents who are keen to develop a career in the environment or water sectors, in a related field of study in a local or overseas university. There are also opportunities for both undergraduates and fresh graduates to pursue a Mid-Term and Masters scholarship. PUB focuses on students pursuing engineering disciplines, mainly in Civil, Electrical, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering; while NEA focuses on environmental-related disciplines such as Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, as well as Sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences and Meteorology, amongst others.

Lau Su Jun, an undergrad pursuing Civil Engineering in the National University of Singapore, was one of the recipients for this year's NEW Scholarship. Passionate about hydrology and urban water management, Su Jun had wanted to pursue a career in the water and environmental sector since young. Her internship at PUB's Water Supply Network Department reaffirmed her interest. "Besides understanding Singapore's integrated resource management approach as a whole, I had the opportunity to study the operations and maintenance regime of the water supply network. Through my stint at PUB, I also learnt the massive work involved in ensuring the seamless transfer of water from the plants to the network and finally to the customers' taps. Understanding this process makes me more appreciative of the clean drinking water we have here in Singapore. I am grateful for the scholarship and privileged to be able to contribute to Singapore's water future," shared Su Jun.

"Ensuring water security and water sustainability is of national importance and a cornerstone in Singapore's standing as an economic hub in Asia. Our NEW Scholars will be empowered with opportunities to learn and grow, as they play a role in reinforcing Singapore as a leading model for sustainable water management. We look forward to having them join the many dedicated men and women in PUB who are committed to securing the water future of Singapore," said Mr Ng Joo Hee, Chief Executive, PUB.

Ng Yi Xin, a recipient of this year's NEW Scholarship, will pursue undergraduate studies in Economics and Geography at University College London (UCL). She feels that these two disciplines provide diverse yet complementary perspectives in tackling environmental issues such as resource management and environmental planning, which are areas of work NEA is involved in. Yi Xin believes that the programme will put her in good stead to tackle a wide range of policy work which she aspires to pursue and will be relevant to Singapore. She said, "I hope that I will be able to experience the personal satisfaction of being able to impact the lives of others as well as pursuing a career in an organisation whose mission I truly believe in."

Mr Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer of NEA said, "The NEW Scholarship provides our scholars an opportunity to embark on a fruitful career that will see them contributing to various initiatives for a liveable and sustainable Singapore. Through the scholarship, they will be inspired and groomed to be our leaders, and be well-equipped to take on environmental challenges of the future."

Upon graduation, scholarship recipients will be offered a challenging career with PUB or NEA. They will be provided with the opportunity to make meaningful contributions through a diverse range of roles including climate change, encouraging energy efficiency, developing Singapore's water resources, fostering industry and technology development, and engaging the People, Private and Public sectors. A total of 154 NEW Scholarships have been offered by both agencies since its inception in 2008.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Masagos Zulkifli (centre), together with this year's National Environment and Water (NEW) scholars.

PUB is a statutory board under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
