Water Efficiency Awards 2017

Introduced in 2017, the Water Efficiency Awards (WEA) is a biennial award which recognizes the top water efficiency performers in the respective sectors. The best performers in each sector refer to premises with the lowest Water Efficiency Index (WEI), or industrial plants with the highest recycling rates. Presented by PUB, this award has evolved from the Water Efficiency Building (Gold & Silver) Certification. 

On 21 Nov 2017, 27 award recipients from seven sectors (Office, Retail, Hotel, Wafer Fabrication, Refinery, School and Estate) received the Water Efficiency Awards from Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources. They were acknowledged for their outstanding efforts in using water efficiently in their operations.   

Award Recipients

1. Office: Asia Square Tower 2, AXA Tower, OUE Downtown  

2. Retail: Big Box, Compass One, Junction 8 Shopping Centre, Parkway Parade

3. Hotel: Carlton City Hotel Singapore, Grand Mercure Singapore Roxy, Marina Mandarin Singapore, The Elizabeth Hotel, V Hotel Lavender  

4. Wafer Fabrication: United Microelectronics Corporation (Singapore Branch) 

5. Refinery: Singapore Refining Company Pte Ltd 

6. School (Primary/Secondary/Junior College): Chung Cheng High School (Main), Clementi Primary School, Fajar Secondary School, Geylang Methodist School (Secondary), Greenview Secondary School, Holy Innocents’ Primary School, Meridian Junior College, Nan Hua Primary School, Qifa Primary School, Tampines Secondary School, Yangzheng Primary School

Qualifying Criteria & Evaluation

To be recognised by the WEA as an water efficient site, these premises’ WEI must be within the top 10th percentile value (i.e. having the lowest WEI) or have the highest recycling rates in the industries sector.  

All qualifying award winners must be certified under Water Efficient Building Certification (Basic) programme, and are the best performers within their sectors.

How is WEI calculated?

The WEI serves as a performance indicator for water efficiency and it refers to the amount of water used per business activity indicator (BAI).   

WEI = Total amount of water consumed / business activity indicator

* Business activity indicator – A measure of business activity that takes into account the business operations of the water user.   

 
 
Best Practice Guide for Water Efficiency - Buildings

With the data and information gathered from the submission of water efficiency management plans by large water users, PUB has developed a publication - Best Practice Guide For Water Efficiency  ( Buildings ) - in consultation with the industry.  The aim of this guide is to provide professional engineers, developers, building owners, facilities managers and managing agents, who are involved in water management, with basic knowledge of designing, maintaining and operating a water-efficient building.

Best Practices on Good Cooling Tower Management

Evaporative cooling towers are an essential part of infrastructure for air-conditioning systems and many industrial processes. The water demand for evaporative cooling’s needs takes up a substantial 25% of the total water demand of large water users. In general, it is estimated that more than 30 mgd (million gallons per day) is used by such evaporative cooling towers.

To reduce water losses to the environment and instil water conservation among facilities owners, PUB has published the “Technical Reference for Water Conservation in Cooling Towers” as a technical guide for the industries and businesses. This first edition book provides best practices on good cooling tower management, operations and design for developers, building owners, managing agents, and industries.
